Preparing Your Home for Ohio Summer Storms
Ohio Summer Storm Season: What to Expect
Northeast Ohio averages 30 to 40 thunderstorm days per year, with the majority occurring between June and August. These storms can bring damaging winds exceeding 60 mph, heavy rainfall causing flash flooding, and occasionally hail and tornadoes.
Trumbull and Mahoning counties sit in a region particularly prone to severe thunderstorms due to moisture from Lake Erie interacting with warm continental air. Being prepared is not optional — it is a matter of when, not if, a significant storm will affect your property.
Inspect and Clean Your Gutters
Clogged gutters are the number-one preventable cause of storm-related water damage we see. When gutters overflow during heavy rain, water cascades down the side of your home and pools against the foundation. Over time, this leads to basement water intrusion, foundation cracks, and exterior damage.
Clean your gutters at least twice a year — in late spring and late fall. Make sure downspouts extend at least 4 to 6 feet away from the foundation. Consider installing gutter guards if your property has heavy tree cover.
Trim Trees and Remove Dead Branches
Dead or damaged tree limbs are projectiles during high winds. Walk your property and look for dead branches, especially those overhanging your roof, power lines, or your neighbor's property. Have large or high branches removed by a professional arborist.
Trees leaning toward your home or with visible root damage are a serious risk. If a tree falls on your home during a storm, insurance typically covers the damage — but the disruption, stress, and temporary displacement are significant. Prevention is far easier.
Check Your Sump Pump
Your sump pump is your basement's primary defense against flooding during heavy rain. Test it by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit — the pump should activate automatically and discharge the water within seconds.
If your pump is older than 7 to 10 years, consider replacing it before storm season. Install a battery backup system so the pump continues running during power outages — which are common during severe storms. A sump pump failure during a storm is one of the most expensive scenarios we respond to.
Secure Outdoor Items and Check Windows
Before any forecasted storm, bring in or secure patio furniture, grills, trash cans, and any loose items that can become airborne. Even lightweight items can cause significant damage when propelled by 60+ mph winds.
Inspect window and door seals. Cracked caulking or deteriorated weatherstripping allows wind-driven rain to penetrate your home. Re-caulk windows and replace worn weatherstripping — these are inexpensive fixes that prevent costly water intrusion during storms.
Have a Storm Emergency Plan
Know where your main water shutoff, gas shutoff, and electrical panel are located. Keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio accessible. Have your insurance policy number and your agent's contact information stored in your phone.
